Inverness

Capital of the Highlands, Inverness is an excellent shopping centre and also boasts the superb Eden Court Theatre, a swimming pool and an ice rink. Three and a half miles from Inverness is the site of the Battle of Culloden (1746) where there is also a small exhibition and slide show.

Dominating the canal on the outskirts of the town is the wooded hill cemetery of Tomnahurich (Hill of the Yew Trees) reputed to be the most beautiful cemetery in the world. Referring to this hill, the Brahan Seer, Highland prophet, said that the one day ships would sail at its feet in an east - west direction, and one hundred and fifty years later the canal was built.

Thomas Telford was the engineer responsible for the building of the Caledonian Canal, and after 19 years of construction, the canal was completed in 1822.

This is an ideal area for a peaceful holiday, with stunning scenery, friendly locals and great food.
